Becoming One Takes Practice

Genesis 2:24
‘The two shall become one flesh’ describes both a sacred reality and a lifelong process. A wedding joins two lives, but oneness is practiced in ordinary decisions—how you communicate, spend, serve, forgive, plan, and pray.
Two people bring different histories, habits, expectations, and ways of seeing the world. Those differences do not have to become battlegrounds. In Christ, they can become places where humility grows and understanding deepens.
Oneness does not erase individuality or require one spouse to dominate the other. It is the work of building a shared life while honouring the person God made your spouse to be. Each time you listen, compromise, repair, or choose ‘we’ over ‘me,’ you practice becoming one.
Reflection question
In what area of our marriage do we need to move from ‘mine’ and ‘yours’ toward ‘ours’?
Prayer
Father, teach us to become one in heart, purpose, and practice. Help us honour our differences without allowing them to divide us. Give us wisdom to build a shared life that reflects Your love. Amen.
Today’s step
Choose one decision you usually make alone and invite your spouse into it today.
