Choose Tenderness

Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

Familiarity can make us careless. We may speak patiently to strangers, respectfully to colleagues, and kindly to friends—then give our spouse whatever attitude remains at the end of the day.

Over time, impatience can become contempt. Eye-rolling, mockery, dismissive laughter, name-calling, and speaking as though our spouse is foolish communicate something deeper than disagreement: “You are beneath me.” That spirit has no place in a marriage shaped by Christ.

Paul tells us to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Clothing ourselves is an intentional act. These qualities may not appear automatically when we are tired, disappointed, or irritated. We must choose to put them on before we respond.

Gentleness is not weakness, and kindness does not require us to avoid difficult truths. We can disagree, establish boundaries, and address serious concerns while still treating our spouse as someone made in God’s image.

Before correcting your spouse, remember their humanity. They carry fears, pressures, disappointments, and wounds that may not always be visible. Compassion asks us to see the person beneath the behaviour.

Your spouse should receive more than the leftovers of your kindness. Let home become the place where your gentleness is most evident and where love is communicated not only through what you say, but also through how you say it.

Prayer

Lord, clothe me with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Forgive me for treating my spouse with less care than I show to others. Remove contempt from my heart and help me speak in a way that protects their dignity. May my presence make our home feel safe and loved. Amen.

Today’s step 

Pay close attention to your tone, facial expressions, and body language today. If you respond disrespectfully, stop immediately, acknowledge it, and begin again with gentleness.
