Strength to Surrender the Need to Be Right

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

In its context, Philippians 4:13 is not a promise that we can always get our way. It is Paul’s testimony that Christ gives us strength to remain faithful, humble, and content in every circumstance.

That strength is especially necessary in marriage.

During conflict, the desire to be understood can quietly become a determination to win. We may interrupt, dismiss our spouse’s feelings, rehearse their failures, or use silence and harsh words to regain control. We can become so focused on proving that we are right that we fail to notice how oppressive our behaviour has become.

Being correct does not give us permission to be cruel. We can possess the stronger argument and still have the weaker spirit. Pride asks, “How can I win?” Love asks, “How can we protect our unity and understand one another?”

Christ strengthens us to do what pride finds difficult: listen without preparing a defence, speak without belittling, admit when we are wrong, apologize without excuses, and surrender the need to have the final word. His strength helps us endure the discomfort of humility and choose love over control.

Today, do not use your strength, knowledge, personality, money, silence, or spiritual language to overpower your spouse. Bring your strength under the leadership of Christ. In marriage, real strength is not demonstrated by defeating the person beside you, but by laying down your pride so that love, safety, and unity can grow between you.

Reflection question (optional)

When disagreements arise, am I seeking understanding and unity—or trying to win, control, and prove that I am right?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, strengthen me to love my spouse with humility. Reveal the ways pride, defensiveness, or the need to be right may be causing harm. Help me listen patiently, speak gently, admit my faults, and use my strength to protect rather than overpower. Teach us to pursue truth with love and unity. Amen.

Today’s step

In your next conversation with your spouse, listen without interrupting or defending yourself. Ask, “What do you need me to understand?” Then repeat what you heard before sharing your perspective.
